‘Brown’ activities in the Cradle of Humankind area in Broederstroom and Kalkheuvel can be stopped. Mrs Mara Kruger on the R512 in Kalkheuvel told MadibengPulse of neighbours who ignore the sensitivity of the Renosterspruit Conservancy Area and in the Cradle of Humankind completely. Land is being cleared and huge tree taken out despite a restriction on these activities in protected areas. “I am not quite sure what these neighbours intend doing but I’ve heard that a nursery is going to be established on one property and a sand and stone business on the other,” she told MadibengPulse. |

There is grave concern among stakeholders generally that the proposed NEM Second Amendment Bill will substantially weaken governance and the sustainability of development, including mining. Particularly because South Africa is in a phase in which development inclusive of mining, is a prime requirement and prime objective of government, this erosion of a critical control is of the greatest concern. The Second Amendment Bill does not embody the spirit in which the NEMA was born, namely broad consultation, environmental justice and sustainability. It appears to be a disturbing move away from participative democracy and will exacerbate the current lack of enforcement and compliance monitoring. |

World Water Week being held in Stockholm, Sweden. About 2500 experts and government leaders are discussing all kinds of issues and experiences relating to water. South Africa marks the start of National Water Week the emphasis is on sustaining lives and enabling growth.
The theme stems from growing concerns that without immediate intervention, the world might experience a water crisis by 2025. However, alongside this campaign, there are headlines of raw sewage in wetlands, acid mine drainage and un-licensed water use.
