E-mail Print PDF

Every year thousands of people visit facilities in South Africa where they can interact with lion cubs, young Cheetah and in some cases even tigers. But seldom do they ask what happens to the cubs when they grow too big for the facilities to manage them.

“There is substantial evidence to suggest that these animals are very often sold, or ‘returned’ to lion and other predator breeding facilities from which they are often sold on as trophies into the very lucrative canned hunting industry, which has thrived in South Africa for at least the past 12 years,” says Yolan Friedmann, CEO of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).

“It is unlikely that management actions which are taken inside the Kruger National Park can solve this problem. One would need a much larger and overarching restoration program for the entire Olifants River system, which should focus on issues such as acid mine drainage, agricultural pesticides and fertiliser use, sewerage treatment and industrial and household sources of pollution,” said the Kruger National Park’s (KNP) Head of Department: Scientific Services Mr Danie Pienaar.

KNP researchers and rangers are calling for more collaborative efforts to ensure that South African rivers are clear of pollution following the discovery of more crocodile carcasses in the Olifants River.

Working on Fire

Fire Season

The Working on Fire programme has been designed to limit the impact of large veldfires on poor communities exposed to such fires and on the environment.  In fire-wise communities people work together to prevent wild fires by removing invasive alien vegetation and deadwood.

Mpumalanga Province: report all fires to the Working on Fire hotline: 013 741 6444.  Be responsible and proactive: Report and prevent the spread of veld fires. Help to prevent veld fires that destroy lives, and our environment!

For more information on how to create  a fire-wise community, call Leanne McKnill, Media and Community Liaison officer for Working on Fire - 082 474 7127
